Samuel Niel Sisson, “Sam,” died peacefully Friday, January 22, 2121, at the age of 93. Sam was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on February 16, 1927. Sam graduated from William Flemings High School, Roanoke , Virginia. After graduating, he went right into the Naval Air Force during WWII. After serving his country, he went to Virginia Tech to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Sam went to work for the Southern Norfork and then the Southern Norfork Railroad where he was able to live throughout the Southeastern U.S. Sam had the honor to help build two churches while he lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee and in Blackswell, Oklahoma. Sam was very involved in the Boy Scouts, Elks Club and Optis Club. It brought him much joy when he had the chance to help young women to get their G.E.D. In 1974, Sam was offered the opportunity to move to Lakeland and work for several phosphate companies.
Sam was very active in tennis until his middle 80's. Everyone who encountered Sam instantly knew him as a loving man who was devoted to his family, friends, and Virginia Tech Hokies football. Sam was always willing to help others.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Niel Sisson. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth Sisson; daughters, Annette and Laura Sisson; son Brian Sisson; 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, Lakeland.
